Szymany (Polish: [ʂɨˈmanɨ]; German: Gross Schiemanen) is a village in the administrative district of Gmina Szczytno, within Szczytno County, Warmian-Masurian Voivodeship, in north-eastern Poland.
In the late 19th century it was inhabited by 737 people, Polish Protestants.
[2] As a result of the Treaty of Versailles the 1920 East Prussian plebiscite was organized on 11 July 1920 under the control of the League of Nations, which resulted in 773 votes to remain in Germany and none for Poland,[3] which just regained independence in 1918.
During World War II, the Germans operated a forced labour camp in the village.
[4] In April 1943, Polish partisans from the Home Army pelted the airport with grenades and burned two hangars.
