[2] Her PhD thesis was titled "a criminological contribution to the discussion on the exemption of victims of intimate partner violence from testifying in criminal proceedings".

[3] She also holds a second masters qualification in Criminal Law and Comparative Social Problems from the University of Barcelona in addition to a first degree in Legal Sciences from the Central American University, San Salvador in El Salvador.

The vacancy was created because the previous office holder's term had not been renewed because of alleged workplace harassment.

[4] Her appointment was announced in May and she began work at the start of June 2021 as IAHCR's Executive Secretary.

She was appointed by the OAS's secretary general, Luis Almagro, as a person of "independence and high moral standing" with a good understanding of human rights[6] from ten candidates chosen for interview from 450 applicants.
