It was made during a private conversation between her, presenter Adrian Chiles and a guest, comedian Jo Brand, but the comment was subsequently reported to BBC staff.

Thatcher argued that the comment had been meant in jest, and that she considered the way the incident had been handled to be a breach of trust, for which she expected an apology from the BBC.
