Harold Thompson Mann (December 1, 1942 – April 4, 2019) was an American competition swimmer for the University of North Carolina, a 1964 Tokyo Olympic 4x100-meter medley swimming gold medalist, and a world record-holder in the 100-meter backstroke.
[4] [5] Mann was a Co-captain of the Junior Varsity basketball team, until a back injury sidelined him for a year, but enabled him to focus on swimming after his recovery.
[3][7] At the Tidewater Invitational Swimming meet as a 17-year old High School Senior, on April 2, 1960, he won the Junior National Championship race in the 100-yard backstroke event.
[9] While attending University of North Carolina from 1960-64, Mann was a three-time all American under the direction of Head Coach Pat Earey.
North Carolina swimmers were ACC co-champions in his final season at the University and were tied for sixth place that year at the NCAA championships.
[11] Mann competed at the 1964 Summer Olympics in Tokyo, Japan, where he received a gold medal swimming the lead-off backstroke leg for the winning U.S. team in the 4×100-meter medley relay.
[15] After North Carolina, Mann studied at Richmond's Medical College of Virginia, and completed an internal medicine residency at the University of California at San Francisco.
