According to the 2002 census of the National Statistics Institute, Tiltil spans an area of 653 km2 (252 sq mi) and has 14,755 inhabitants (7,609 men and 7,146 women).
[2] As a commune, Tiltil is a third-level administrative division of Chile administered by a municipal council, headed by an alcalde who is directly elected every four years.
The commune is represented in the Senate by Guido Girardi Lavín (PPD) and Jovino Novoa Vásquez (UDI) as part of the 7th senatorial constituency (Santiago-West).
The road recently underwent extensive improvements and connects the Pan-American Highway with Valparaíso and Viña del Mar on the coast.
The Monument to Chilean patriot Manuel Rodríguez is located just to the south of Tiltil on the route to the Pan-American Highway and Polpaico.
