Tinton, South Dakota

Tinton is a ghost town in the Black Hills of Lawrence County, South Dakota, United States.

Fillmore purchased 334-acre (135 ha) claim on Potato Creek near Tinton and founded his Dakota Tin and Gold Company in 1937.

He immediately constructed several buildings, including a new shaft house south of the existing mine at Tinton, an assayer's office, several cabins, sheds, and two dams.

[5] 5 acres (2.0 ha) of the Dakota Tin and Gold Mine's principal site near Tinton were listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2005.

The mine briefly resumed operations during World War II and began producing feldspar, lithium, and more tin.

The historical Main Street ran down the Wyoming-South Dakota state line, but the town is most widely accepted to be inside the latter.

The modern mining operation replaced the Wyoming-side structures with new buildings; historically, the Wyoming side of town included the hotel, school, post office, and blacksmith.
