He made his Primeira Liga debut as a 12th-minute substitute in a 1–0 home win over Vitória de Setúbal on 28 September.

In June 2023, while at the Portugal national under-21 football team camp, Tavares suffered an ACL tear, which became his second similar injury in 13 months.
