His 1954 screenplay for Night People was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Story.

His final years were spent working in television.

In 1940, a $663 court judgment was entered against Reed for a "beating administered" when an attorney, Louis L. Goldman, served papers on him concerning an alimony claim by Reed's ex-wife.
