[1] Spencer played 76 matches for Kent[2] either side of World War II as an attacking batsman.
[3] Although Spencer won his County cap, his career was disrupted by World War II in which he served in the Royal Air Force.
[4] At the suggestion of Frank Chester, Spencer joined the first-class umpire's list in 1950 and was appointed to his first Test in 1954.
Spencer was with his local club Hastings & St Leonards[6] until September 1933 after which he had a short spell with Bexhill[7] of the Sussex County League.
During June 1981 he wrote a series of historic career articles in the Newcastle based Sunday Sun newspaper.
