The network first opened in early May 1881 with horse-drawn trams.

In 1898, the tram network was electrified with overhead lines.

During the summer of 1993, the first low-floor-tram started passenger service on line 4.

[4] Stadler is supplying 11 new Tramlink units as a replacement for the M8C and GT6M trams.

The line is supposed to start from the main train station (Hauptbahnhof), to the University Hospital (Uniklinik).
