Treasurer of Victoria

The Treasurer of Victoria is the title held by the Cabinet Minister who is responsible for the financial management of the budget sector in the Australian state of Victoria.

This primarily includes:[1] By convention, the state treasurer is a member of the Legislative Assembly, the lower house of the Parliament of Victoria, as with the premier.

This allows the treasurer to be present during debate on the budget and other financial legislation and is in line with the constitutional requirement that money bills originate from the lower house.

However, in 2007 John Lenders was appointed treasurer from the Legislative Council, the first time the treasurer had been appointed from the upper house.

As a result Lenders had to be "formally voted into the lower house to deliver his budget speech".
