It is home to the Rengma Nagas, with a population of 63,269 (2011) and an area of 256 square kilometres.
The district covers two taluks (administrative circles), which are Tseminyü and Tsogin.
According to the 2011 census of India the then Tseminyü circle of Kohima District had a population of 63,629.
