The stadium was in the midst of significant renovations following the 2005 season, but Hurricane Katrina nearly destroyed the facility, forcing the project to start over.
It was scheduled to be completed in April 2007, but heavy rain during the winter of 2007 pushed back the opening to the 2008 season.
This mode of fundraising, in which fans could buy commemorative bricks to be placed at the entry of the new stadium, generated unexpected levels of interest, warranting the expansion.
