As of the census[7] of 2000, there were 5,103 people, 2,121 households, and 1,495 families residing in the township.

There were 2,227 housing units at an average density of 231.4 per square mile (89.3/km2).

26.3% of all households were made up of individuals, and 15.1% had someone living alone who was sixty-five years of age or older.

In the township the population was spread out, with 18.9% under the age of eighteen, 6.9% from eighteen to twenty-four, 24.3% from twenty-five to forty-four, 26.5% from forty-five to sixty-four, and 23.5% who were sixty-five years of age or older.

The Union Area School District serves the township.
