At the time, it was known as Arkansas Industrial University, and did not have a separate engineering college.

In 2006, a solar boat built by University of Arkansas mechanical engineering students and electrical engineering students won the Collegiate World Championships.

The Nanoscale Material Science and Engineering Building (known as the Nano Building), housing the microelectronics-photonics (MicroEP) program opened September 2011 at 731 West Dickson.
