[6] VMRO–NP was founded on 4 July 2004 by former VMRO–DPMNE leader Ljubčo Georgievski due to personal and ideological differences with his successor Nikola Gruevski.
In the 2011 parliamentary election, VMRO–NP received 28,500 votes (2.51%), losing all of its seats.
[8] VMRO–NP remained an extra-parliamentary party until the 2020 parliamentary election, when it participated in the We Can alliance led by the Social Democratic Union of Macedonia (SDSM) and won one seat.
Georgievski succeeded to the position of party president on 26 February 2012.
[9] In the 2024 parliamentary elections, the party participated in a coalition led by SDSM and lost one seat.
