[1] Valayanad Bhagavathi is the family deity of the Zamorin Kings ( Padinhare Kovilakam), who ruled Kozhikode in the medieval period.

Immediately Devi told him that she wouldn't come any further, but as a reward for the Zamorin's devotion, she would throw her bangle, and the spot where it fell would have her presence.

The presiding deity of this temple is the goddess from Kashmir, known as Chandika, also called Mahartham and Kalasarppini.

The Sreechakra, designed by the great Sivayogi Thayyavur Sivasankar, remains in the sanctum sanctorum, where the presence of the goddess is believed to be ever present.

Idols of Shiva, Thevaara Bhagavathi, Lord Ayyappa, and Vigneswara, Khsethrapaalan are also consecrated in this temple.

Meat and alcohol is a core feature of worship in this temple, and the priests are by necessity non-vegetarian.
