Vehicle registration plates of Iceland

Early 2004 a country identifier (IS) and the Icelandic flag was added on the left side of all standard plates.

In 2019, a registration was no longer needed for mopeds and quadricycles with a top speed under 25km/h, easing the import and use of electric scooters, which were previously classified under this category.

[7] The colour of the license plate varies depending on the purpose of the vehicle (see chart below.

The owner has until the end of the following month to repair any items that failed inspection and present the vehicle for a re-inspection.

the car will fail inspection and will be given a red sticker that says "Akstur bönnuð" which means driving prohibited and the vehicle must not be driven on public roads until the issues have been rectified.
