It lies on the border between the Upper Morava Valley and Nízký Jeseník range.
The highest point is the hill Chlum at 344 m (1,129 ft) above sea level.
From 1361 until the establishment of an independent municipality in 1848, the village was owned by the metropolitan chapter of Olomouc.
The main landmark of Velký Týnec is the Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary.
