Virgem da Lapa is located just on the left bank (north) of the Jequitinhonha River at an elevation of 385 meters (center of the town).
Neighboring municipalities are: Rubelita - Coronel Murta - Araçuaí - Berilo - José Gonçalves de Minas - Josenópolis.
