[1] He served as a member of the Parliament of Ceylon for the Galle electorate, representing the United National Party.
[2] Abeygoonawardena entered politics by joining the Sinhala Maha Sabha in 1945 at the request of S. W. R. D. Bandaranaike, and became the first regional president of Galle District.
He ran for the seat of Galle at the 3rd parliamentary election held in April 1956 but was defeated by the incumbent member Dahanayake by 10,956 votes.
[7] Abeygoonawardena printed bus tickets in Sinhala, and reserved special seats on buses for Buddhist clergy, who were not charged for travel regardless of the distance.
He donated 2.0 ha (5 acres) of land and fully funded the construction of the Naotunna Junior School.
