He also served as the speaker of the House of Representatives from 1996 to 2000, becoming the first Thai Muslim, ethnic Malay, and individual of ethnic minority descent who served as House speaker in non-consecutive terms.
From 1994 to 1995, he was appointed Deputy Minister of the Interior and was President (Speaker) of Parliament from November 1996 to June 2000.
