Located in the far eastern part of the county, it borders the following townships: It is the most easterly township in Hocking County.
Murray City, the smallest municipality in Hocking County, is located in Ward Township, as are the unincorporated communities of Carbon Hill and Sand Run.
It was named for Naham (or perhaps Nathan[4]) Ward, a landowner.
[6] The township is governed by a three-member board of trustees, who are elected in November of odd-numbered years to a four-year term beginning on the following January 1.
The residents of Ward Township are served by the Nelsonville-York City School District and Nelsonville-York High School.
