Located in the eastern part of the county, it borders the following townships: It was wholly within the Virginia Military District and was surveyed under the metes and bounds system.
The township is the home of Fort Ancient, a prehistoric earthwork built by the Mound Builders 2,000 years ago.
[6] The township is governed by a three-member board of trustees, who are elected in November of odd-numbered years to a four-year term beginning on the following January 1.
