It lies about halfway between the cities of Hastings and Red Wing and 36 miles southeast of Saint Paul.

It is centered on the small community of Welch on the Cannon River.

As of the census[1] of 2000, there were 697 people, 249 households, and 192 families residing in the township.

17.7% of all households were made up of individuals, and 4.4% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older.

It starred Minnesotan Josh Hartnett, along with Leelee Sobieski and Chris Klein.
