The academy is sponsored by Sellafield Ltd, the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority and the University of Central Lancashire.

The academy is on the site of the old Wyndham School, and has been fully rebuilt, moving into the new buildings at Easter 2012.

The principal of West Lakes Academy is Mrs Abby Deeks whose new position (previously Vice-Principal) was announced in June 2022, ahead of the 2022–2023 academic year.

All classrooms face outwards from open learning areas on each of the three floors of the building.
