His brother Adrian Jefferson Newton was the Clerk of the North Carolina Supreme Court for 35 years (from October 15, 1941 – December 1, 1976).

Recruitment became difficult during at least part of his tenure as Head Coach due to the fact that World War II necessitated that eligible males over 18 be inducted into the U.S. military.
