Winfried Nöth

Winfried Nöth (born September 12, 1944 in Gerolzhofen) is a German linguist and semiotician.

After teaching in Bochum and Aachen, in 1978 he was appointed full professor in English Linguistics at the University of Kassel.

Since 1999 he has been Director of the Scientific Centre for Cultural Research, University of Kassel, and President of the German Society for Semiotics.

Insofar as these morphemes constitute a coherent pattern of relations which create a line of mentation, they form a diagrammatic icon".

Another example is “the relationship between great, greater, greatest….since the morphological pattern of adjective grading is the same as in loud, louder, loudest”.
