Yachiyo is located in the western part of Ibaraki prefecture, almost in the center of the Kanto Plain.
The Kinugawa River flows through the town, Ibaraki Prefecture Yachiyo has a Humid continental climate (Köppen Cfa) characterized by warm summers and cool winters with little snowfall.

Yachiyo has a mayor-council form of government with a directly elected mayor and a unicameral town council of 14 members.
In terms of national politics, the town is part of Ibaraki 7th district of the lower house of the Diet of Japan.
