It is located in the western central part of the oblast.

The area of the district is 29,500 square kilometers (11,400 sq mi).

[2] Its administrative center is the urban locality (an urban-type settlement) of Yagodnoye.

There are a number of abandoned villages in the district, such as Taskan, Elgen and Ust-Taskan.

The most important rivers of the district are the Kolyma, Debin, Orotukan, Taskan, Bakhapcha and Kongo.
