Its legacy unit, 3rd Battalion, 103rd Armor, is a subordinate command of the 55th Heavy Brigade Combat Team, 28th Infantry Division.

Their missions included area patrols and traffic control points supporting the 1st Marine Division from Camp Fallujah.

They were eventually relocated to the Green Zone/International Zone as security escorts attached to the U.S. Navy for high-ranking Interim Iraqi government officials.

In June 2004, the 1st Battalion, 103rd Armor was activated at Fort Bliss, Texas and deployed to Iraq in November for Operation Iraqi Freedom.

The battalion, now designated as Task Force Dragoon, was stationed at Forward Operating Base Summerall, near Bayji.
