On December 29, 1918, in the town of Lwówek, Provinz Posen, a cavalry unit was formed by Sergeant Wojciech Swierczek.
On November 18, 1919, in front of the town hall in Poznań, Colonel Paslawski of the regiment received a flag, handed to him by General Jozef Dowbor-Musnicki.
In March 1920, after renaming into 16th Greater Poland Uhlan Regiment, the unit was transported east, to fight in the Polish-Soviet War.
After heavy fighting against panzer units of General Heinz Guderian and being bombed by the Luftwaffe, the regiment ceased to exist on September 7.
