The elections were held for the role of Mayor of Lower Hutt plus other local government positions including the nine borough councillors, also elected biennially.

The polling was conducted using the standard first-past-the-post electoral method.

The mayor, Will Strand, decided not to accept nomination for a further term after which efforts were made to have councillor Sir Alex Roberts to stand for the position.

[1] Roberts has agreed to accept nomination for the mayoralty in response to a deputation.

[2] At a meeting of the Chamber of Commerce, Justin McCarthy Power, was requested to stand for mayor which he accepted.
