Six riders – Eddy Merckx, Roger De Vlaeminck, Freddy Maertens, André Dierickx, Dietrich Thurau and Bernard Hinault – were in front of the race.
While all eyes were on Eddy Merckx, André Dierickx launched an attack at 8 km from the finish.
