2002 elections in India

Elections in the Republic of India in 2002 included elections to seven state legislative assemblies and the elections for the posts of President and vice-president.

A. P. J. Abdul Kalam became the 11th President by beating his nearest rival Lakshmi Sahgal.

[6] An election was held on 12 August 2002 to elect the newly vacated post of Vice-President of India.

Bhairon Singh Shekhawat defeated Sushil Kumar Shinde to become 11th Vice President of India.

[7] Incumbent VP Krishan Kant did not contest the election and died before the election occurred.
