On February 16, 2017, face off specialist Greg Gurenlian announced that he would be retiring at the end of the season.
Despite a 17–14 win over the Charlotte Hounds, the Lizards finished 7–7 and missed out on the playoffs for the first time in four years.
Gurenlian won 20 of his 33 faceoffs in his last game in front of the largest crowd of the season.
