County Monaghan was divided into 3 local electoral areas (LEAs) to elect councillors for a five-year term of office on the electoral system of proportional representation by means of the single transferable vote (PR-STV).
[1][2] Bucking a trend elsewhere Sinn Féin slightly increased their vote in County Monaghan.
The Sinn Féin loss was to former Carrickmacross town councillor, Mary Kerr-Conlon.
However the Fine Gael vote in County Monaghan fell by over 5%, a consequence of Hugh McElvaney retaining his seat in Ballybay-Clones as an Independent.
