[3] The city itself won the internal bidding phase by the Chinese Badminton Association, being the preferred city over Nanjing (later chosen to host 2018 BWF World Championships), Qingdao, and Wuhan.

On the day of the draw, it was announced that the original list of 32 teams was pared down to 31, with Kenya withdrawing from the tournament.
