[5] Following the 2019 election, the Democratic Party gained 2 seats in the Senate, and gained control of both chambers of the General Assembly, marking the first time that Democrats held a government trifecta in Virginia since 1993.

This Senate election as well as those for the House of Delegates were held following the U.S. Supreme Court's decision to overturn Roe v. Wade with the Dobbs v. Jackson Women's Health Organization decision, which ruled that abortion is not a constitutional right in the United States.

One seat was left vacant on the day of the general election due to resignation in 2023.

Five incumbent senators, four Democrats and one Republican, were defeated in the June 20 primary election.
