The district assembly is located in the southeast part of Volta Region and has Akatsi as its capital town.
Akatsi South District was officially elevated to a municipality on October 5, 2020, when Legislative Instrument (LI) 2420 was passed by the Ghanaian parliament and signed into law by President Nana Akufo-Addo.
The elevation was a result of the municipality's economic and social development, as well as its strategic location in the Volta Region.
