Akishima, Tokyo

Akishima (昭島市, Akishima-shi) is a city located in the western portion of the Tokyo Metropolis, Japan.

Akishima is located on the left bank of the Tama River, about 35 kilometers west of central Tokyo.

Tokyo Metropolis Akishima has a humid subtropical climate (Köppen Cfa) characterized by warm summers and cool winters with light to no snowfall.

Following the dedication of Tachikawa Airfield, which was established in 1922, the surrounding area developed in the 1930s with large-scale munitions factories for aircraft manufacturing for the Imperial Japanese Army.

Akishima has a mayor-council form of government with a directly elected mayor and a unicameral city council of 22 members.

In terms of national politics, the city is part of Tokyo 25th district of the lower house of the Diet of Japan.
