The pectoral fin has a strong spine, and the anterior margin has a notch visible dorsally and usually serrated posteriorly.

The head and body are covered with rounded tubercles arranged in longitudinal rows in Acrochordontichthys and Breitensteinia or evenly distributed in Parakysis.
