He is thought of mostly as a Tin Pan Alley era lyricist; however, he did write music on occasion as well.
During this time, he most often collaborated with popular songwriters Al Sherman and Abner Silver.

[3] Lewis's career received a boost in 1956 when "Blueberry Hill", a song he had co-written in the 1940s with Larry Stock, became a big hit for Fats Domino.
Two years later Lewis and Sylvester Bradford, a blind African-American songwriter, wrote "Tears on My Pillow", which was a hit for Little Anthony and the Imperials.
