Kawal was also the head baseball coach at the University of Tulsa in 1964, tallying a mark of 10–12.
He played football and basketball at Northwestern University Kawal got his first head coaching job as the 16th head football coach at Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa and he held that position for two seasons, from 1947 until 1948.
