Alberto M. Carvalho MedM (born 1965)[1] is a Portuguese-American educator and the superintendent of Los Angeles Unified School District.
[4] In February 2014, the American Association of School Administrators (AASA) named Carvalho the 2014 National Superintendent of the Year.
[6] On December 9, 2021, he accepted the position of Los Angeles Unified School District’s next superintendent following the resignation of Austin Beutner.
[11] Carvalho began his career in education as a physics, chemistry, and calculus teacher at Miami Jackson Senior High.
[14] Carvalho controversially "franchised" MAST Academy, opening three new schools based on the original Virginia Key institution.
[15][16] In 2012, Carvalho served as President of the Association of Latino Administrators and Superintendents and is currently on the Board of Directors of The Children's Trust.
[21] Under Carvalho's leadership as superintendent, the Miami-Dade County Public Schools won the Broad Prize for Urban Education in 2012.
