[1] Alfred Clifford was born in Torquay in 1849 and educated at Corpus Christi College, Cambridge.
[2][3][4] He was the younger brother of Mary, who became a pioneering Poor Law Guardian, and Edward, who became a noted artist.
[5] Clifford was ordained in 1872 and, after a brief period as curate at St Nicholas Nottingham,[6] emigrated to India Here he worked for the Church Missionary Society before gaining the post of chaplain to the Bishop of Calcutta in 1885.
In retirement he returned to England and served as Vicar of Stoke Bishop.
