Altmünster, Mainz

The Altmünster abbey near Mainz, Germany, was reputedly founded by Saint Bilihildis (d. 734), who served as the first abbess; however, it may well be a 7th-century foundation.

The abbey church was given to a Protestant congregation in the early 19th century; it was destroyed during World War II but rebuilt and reconsecrated.

According to a foundation charter (considered a forgery by many scholars[1][2]), the abbey was founded on 22 April 635.

Some of the remaining nuns joined the Cistercian Weißfrauenkloster, others the Dalheimkloster, both in Mainz.

The building was destroyed by Allied bombs during World War II; it was rebuilt in the 1950s and re-consecrated in 1960.
