Administratively, it is divided into 7 districts: El Rodeo, Las Juntas, La Puerta, Los Varela, El Bolsón, Singuil, and Los Castillos.
Other versions suggest that it comes from the Quechua word Hamppatu or Ampatu, which means "Toad Hill".
