Ambrose Congreve

He was the son of Major John Congreve and Lady Helena Ponsonby, the daughter of the 8th Earl of Bessborough.

[5] Several generations of Congreves had lived on the estate, which then included only a simple terraced garden and surrounding woodland.

In addition to the 18th-century house (the ancestral home of Ambrose Congreve), there are wall-gardens and glasshouses, and more than 16 miles of paths.

Congreve was dedicated to maintaining the historic gardens at his family's estate until his final years.

The couple divided their time between two homes, Mount Congreve in Ireland and Winkfield Manor in Berkshire, England.
