Located in southern Ibaraki Prefecture, Ami is bordered to the north by Lake Kasumigaura Ibaraki Prefecture Ami has a Humid continental climate (Köppen Cfa) characterized by warm summers and cool winters with light snowfall.

The villages of Ami, Kimihara, Asahi and Funashima were created with the establishment of the modern municipalities system on April 1, 1889.
Ami has a mayor-council form of government with a directly elected mayor and a unicameral town council of 18 members.
In terms of national politics, the town is part of Ibaraki 6th district of the lower house of the Diet of Japan.
